CAPS operates from a short-term therapy model, which allows us to serve the broad needs of our student community. Most students are seen for an average of 4β6 sessions during a semester. We are well equipped to support many of the common concerns college students face, including stress, anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, identity exploration, and adjustment to college life.
However, our services are not designed to provide long-term, intensive, or specialized treatment. Students who present with severe or persistent mental health concerns may be referred to off-campus providers to ensure they receive the level of care they need. Our staff will work with you to connect to appropriate community resources if longer-term or specialized care is recommended.
Initial Consultations on a first-come, first-available basis, with both same-day (when available) and advance scheduling options. If you are in crisis and need immediate support, please refer to our Crisis page to identify appropriate resources.
If you are looking to schedule an initial appointment with a provider who specializes in substance use counseling or are a student athlete looking to schedule with our Sport Psychologist, please let our front desk staff know when you call to schedule so they can ensure you are scheduled with the appropriate provider. Additionally, please let us know if you have accessibility needs.
Cancelling or Rescheduling Sessions
Personal commitment to counseling is crucial for success. We encourage students to attend all scheduled appointments. If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please do so as soon as possible by calling CAPS at 704-687-0311. Repeated missed sessions without advance notice may negatively affect your eligibility for counseling services at CAPS.
For students meeting with us through telehealth, there are a few important requirements to ensure safety and quality of care:
- You must be physically located in the state at the time of your appointment.
- You should be in a private, safe, and stable location. For your well-being, we cannot conduct sessions if you are driving.
- You will be asked to confirm your location at the start of each session in case of an emergency.
These guidelines help us provide the best support possible while maintaining safety and compliance with state regulations.
- Students preferring to attend counseling sessions remotely through Zoom who do not have access to a private space and/or appropriate technology, have the option to schedule a space at CAPS to attend those sessions. Please discuss these needs with our front desk staff or an initial consultation counselor.
- Students who are located outside of North Carolina should contact CAPS by phone and identify their location to inquire about availability of services. State licensing laws may limit what counseling services we are able to provide, but we can discuss available services and assist students in connecting to local resources.
