Two 20-hour per week graduate assistantships are available at Counseling & Psychological Services each academic year. Students will be in good standing in the Ph.D. program in Clinical Health Psychology or Counseling at UNC Charlotte. Students will have completed courses in basic counseling/clinical theory and techniques, ethics, multicultural counseling, and personality or abnormal psychology. The stipend is $20,000 per year.
The graduate assistantship position at Counseling & Psychological Services is a 20-hour per week experience that can include the following activities:
- Two therapeutic consultation sessions per week
- Approximately eight individual counseling sessions per week
- One hour of individual face-to-face supervision per week
- One and a half hours of weekly group supervision
- Bi-monthly full staff meetings and quarterly staff-wide trainings on diversity and inclusion (as schedules permit)
- Specialized training and experience in group counseling or outreach (see below). The time commitment for each is two to three hours per week.
Group Experience
Graduate Assistants have the opportunity to elect participation in specialized training in a group modality at CAPS. The training is flexible to the student’s level of experience and can include co-leading a discussion or theme-based group, structured psycho-educational group, or workshop, and attending an all-staff group case conference.
Outreach Experience
Graduate Assistants have the opportunity to elect participation in outreach at CAPS. This training is viewed as an apprenticeship experience in which the Graduate Assistant will receive mentorship from Outreach Leadership and take part in assisting with outreach-related activities, conducting outreach, and receiving training/mentorship in outreac

Selected applicants will be interviewed following submission of their applications. The Assistantship is a two-semester (fall and spring) appointment that will be open every year. Students who are in the GA position can reapply following their initial placement and the maximum placement in the position is two academic years.
If you are a student interested in becoming a trainee at Counseling & Psychological Services, it is important to consider some ethical issues related to the potential for dual roles. Prospective trainees who seek counseling at CAPS should be aware that they will limit who would be available to supervise them and coordinate their training experiences. Due to the importance of avoiding multiple relationships, a Ph.D. student in the Clinical Health Psychology program who would like to be a trainee at this Center will not be able to have counseling with the Practicum Coordinator or the Assistant or Associate Training Directors. For the same reason, students are not eligible to receive counseling at CAPS while they are trainees here. If requested, CAPS can provide referral options to current trainees, including low-cost options if needed.
