Purpose & Goals
We were excited to welcome our first postdoctoral fellow to UNC Charlotte Counseling & Psychological Services for the 2013-2014 year! We have been training predoctoral interns since 1973 and have seen significant growth in UNC Charlotte, CAPS, and the training programs we offer.
Training is a vital part of what we do in Counseling & Psychological Services and we want to emphasize the important role that our postdoctoral fellow plays in this area. The fellowship is designed first and foremost to provide psychologists with advanced generalist training and supervised experience as they work toward licensure. A unique focus of our fellowship is on developing specialized skills in providing supervision and training.
The fellowship is a full-time, twelve month position open to applicants with a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in counseling or clinical psychology. We hope that you find the information you need within these pages. If you find that our program matches your needs and interests, we would be pleased to receive your application.
Training model & philosophy
The purpose of our postdoctoral fellowship is to support psychologists during the transition from internship to licensure while helping them continue to hone their skills as a generalist while gaining specialized experience. It is our hope and expectation that postdoctoral fellows exiting our program do so ready to practice autonomously as newly-licensed clinicians in a university counseling center or other mental health setting. While a primary goal for our postdoctoral fellows is to gain supervised clinical experience while working toward licensure, we also recognize that the postdoctoral year is an opportunity to develop more specialized skills. We have developed the fellowship with an emphasis on the provision of supervision and training, and expect that fellows will gain increased competence in this area. The postdoctoral training program at Counseling & Psychological Services emphasizes experiential learning supported by supervision, mentoring, and professional development.
Service Activities
Individual Counseling and Psychotherapy
Each semester, the postdoctoral fellow schedules an average of fifteen individual clients per week. A short-term approach is utilized at Counseling & Psychological Services, ( 4-6 sessions per counseling contact.) Exceptions to these parameters are granted through a case review and consultation with supervisors and postdoctoral fellows may choose to see two clients on a longer-term basis.
Initial Consultations and On-Call/Crisis Coverage
CAPS provides daily intake and on-call coverage to assess new clients, manage crises, and to provide consultation to the university community. The postdoctoral fellow participates in this important service by providing one four hour Counselor on Duty shift that includes initial consultations, crisis appointments, and consultations with UNC Charlotte faculty and staff, and others. Intakes involve meeting with each client, obtaining a brief history, assessing current needs, and making decisions about the appropriate assignment of the case.
Group Counseling
During the year, postdoctoral fellows have the opportunity to co-facilitate a psychotherapy group with a senior staff member, a structured/theme-oriented group, or both. Group offerings are updated each semester and current groups are available on our Group Counseling page.
Outreach and Consultation
The postdoctoral fellow will have opportunities to participate in outreach and consultation activities, depending on the fellow’s interest and University need. Fellows are expected to average 1-2 hours of outreach per month. Examples of possible outreach/consultation activities include programming in residence halls, presentations in classrooms, programming in conjunction with the Student Health Center, and programming or consultation with student groups.
Supervision of Beginning Practicum Students
The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for providing primary individual supervision to the beginning practicum students throughout the fall and spring semesters. The postdoctoral fellow will supervise between two and four beginning practicum students each year. For most beginning practicum students, this will be their first practicum and they will see approximately 1-3 clients per week. The postdoctoral fellow will also design and facilitate the Beginning Practicum Seminar. The seminar will meet weekly for one hour and will include didactic presentations, case presentations, and group/peer consultation.
Training Committee
The postdoctoral fellow will serve on the Training Committee throughout the year and attend monthly meetings. The Training Committee focuses on developing and enhancing policies, procedures, and documents related to the various levels of training in Counseling & Psychological Services.
